This 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone is the result of an A/FX dragster-inspired custom build which was conducted by its previous owner in partnership with his brother, the proprietor of Extreme Machine Unlimited in Walpole, Massachusetts between 2012-2014. The body is finished in House of Kolor Brandywine Metallic over a black interior, and power is from a bored and stroked 469ci FE-series V8 paired with a modified C6 automatic transmission from Monster Transmission. Other details include mini-tubs, chassis reinforcements, a roll bar, American Rebel Machine wheels, and more. I acquired the car in 2016, and it was featured in the August 2017 issue of Car Craft.
The Comet was based on a stretched variant of the Ford Falcon chassis for 1965, with Cyclone trim available only for the two-door hardtop variant. This example was acquired by its previous owner as a complete vehicle, and modified with welded frame connectors and tubbed rear bodywork by DMC Racing in Massachusetts. Prep and paintwork were performed by Competition Specialties in Walpole,MA, who finished the car in a silver base coat and House of Kolor Brandywine Metallic top coats with black accents as well as argent silver bumpers and mesh brake cooling ducts.
The Ford FE-series V8 was bored and stroked to 469 cubic inches and fitted with a SCAT 4340 forged crankshaft, Eagle forged H-beam connecting rods, 11.25:1 JE pistons, a Cam Motion camshaft, and roller lifters. Custom-machined aluminum Edelbrock RPM cylinder heads are fitted with Harland Sharp roller rockers and Ferrea valves. Twin 650cfm Edelbrock four-barrel carburetors feed air and fuel through an Air-Gap intake manifold. A Concept One pulley system and a custom Ron Davis radiator with twin SPAL fans are also fitted.
American Rebel Machine wheels are mounted with 165-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires up front and Mickey Thompson ET Street 295s tucked beneath the rear fenders. Suspension modifications include dual-adjustable coilovers from Total Control Products up front and QAI adjustable coilovers with monoleaf springs and CalTracs traction bars at the rear. Black vinyl covers low-backed bucket seats, with a matching bench in the rear. A four-point roll bar was fabricated by DMC Racing and anchors Simpson four-point harnesses.
The three-spoke steering wheel frames a suite of AutoMeter gauges in a custom dash. The digital odometer shows 246 miles, with approximately 1,000 driven since the completion of the build. Gears are selected using a Kwik Shift 1 shifter from Precision Performance Products.
The battery has been moved to the trunk and is housed in an aluminum box.
The rocker assemblies were just rebuilt by Harland Sharp and valve cover gaskets replaced within the last 40 miles, and an oil change using Brad Penn 20w50 was performed within the last 200 miles.
The C6 automatic transmission was modified by Monster Transmission and features a reverse manual valve body. A Ford 9? rear end with Strange 31-spline axles turns the rear wheels. The 3" stainless steel dual exhaust system features a center crossover and Borla mufflers.
