The custom Mercury mystique was inadvertently popularized by James Dean through his association with one of the cars he drove and, later, in other feature Hollywood movies: American Graffiti, Cobra, and Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), etc. Over the years, the 1949-1951 Custom Mercury's are still the ones against which all other customs are judged.
This low production number 1950 Mercury Monterey 2-door coupe luxury model underwent a fully documented frame off custom build and remains an exemplary example of an all steel, rust free period custom. It has all the classic custom hallmarks, from the frenched headlights and custom grille, to the chopped top and beautiful PPG Black Cherry paint. It is breathtaking from any angle. It is estimated that only 800 Mercury Monterey Coupes were produced in 1950 in a last-minute response to General Motors’ debut of their brand-new line, the Hardtop.
When it was chopped, the windshield was moved down into the rear deck to facilitate better driver vision. Because of the smooth, long flow of the rooflines extending into the rear deck, the chop accentuates the classy long sleek look. With its chopped top, lowered stance, smooth flowing lines, and wide whitewalls with moon hubcaps, this car shows the classic profile.
This Mercury sits on a stock modified chassis with adjustable air shocks and leaf spring rear suspension. The front suspension features dropped spindles and independent front and is equipped with power disc brakes, power steering, and polished axle-back dual exhaust pipes.
It is powered by a professionally tuned Chevrolet Performance 327ci 8-cylinder/340 hp engine, Edelbrock intake, Flowtech headers, Holley Street Avenger carburetion, HEI electronic ignition, electric fan, finned valve covers. It is backed by an upgraded GM TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and Ford 9” rear end with 3:55 gear ratio.
The exterior features a nosed hood and decked trunk, new stainless-steel hardware and fasteners, hand-formed window frames and sail panels, power windows and winged quarter windows, custom fit bumpers and 6" chop. The trim, moldings and door handles with automatic door kickers have all been shaved. The light features include factory headlight and taillight bezels with Halogen headlights.
The interior features a renewed factory instrument panel with original style gauges, polished chrome accents and Mercury lettering, Flaming River tilt steering column, RPC steering wheel, and custom Dolphin Grey high-grade vinyl interior all of which fully compliment the overall high-quality expression of the vehicle.
