Description:
1948 Ford Hauler-Slidebed
• We built this Hauler to transport vehicles we displayed, showed and towed a display trailer that was a turntable. We would use the slidebed to shift the vehicle to the turntable. We have a hard side bed van cover and a canvas cover with aluminum framework we fabricated. We also used the Hauler to transport vehicles we worked on and pickup of project vehicles. The reason I am selling the hauler as I am no longer showing with the turntable and downsizing our fabrication shop. This has been a great tool and have enjoyed it thoroughly using it. The body on the truck is ready to go to the body shop for preparation and paint. We have a few minor dents scrubs and need final blocking. We have used it and one of the enjoyable tools/truck in our fleet, it gets looks wherever it goes and on the road.
• Body
o Gray epoxy primer, pin stripping. We never got around to painting the body.
o Hauler was built using (2) Ford F6 trucks to make a double cab. The Body was widened to fit on a 2003 Silverado chassis, engine and transmission. Features Diesel Duramax with Allison transmission. F6 bodies were widened 18” to fit the stock Silverado chassis.
o The double cab was fabricated using the two bodies. The four corners were set and rear doors fabricated from the other two doors from the body. The rear doors open suicide style.
o Front hood was widened 9” on each side with a center hinge panel. Stiffeners were added to the hood with custom latches, so each side opens like a clam shell with hood latches and hold opens. The front nostril opening was widened with the hold to allow good air flow thru the engine compartment.
o Front fenders where narrowed 9” each side and configured with front grills which was fabricated and widened 18” along with front bumper.
o Running boards were extended to rear doors. Reinforced to stand on such that they are functional. Custom lights added to the rear section of running boards similar to front grill turn signals.
o Third brake light was cut in from Silverado and wired into system. Rear window was widened. Custom flat glass was fabricated and installed with gluing two stock rubbers together.
o Front windshield is two flat glass panels v-butted together using stock rubbers glued together. Windshield wipers added above window with wiper motor installed in area behind dash and wired to switch inside cab.
o Aluminum boxes have been added to each side for holding tie downs, air compressor for overload air springs and miscellaneous tools you may want to take with you.
o Custom rear hitch extended such that you minimize trailer hitting bed sides. This is removeable if you want to take to take it off.
o Slide bed is a Landol center fold slide bed, aluminum toping with hydraulic winch with pump in engine compartment. Switch on dash to turn pump off and on. Custom winch cover. Numerous tie down hoops and cut outs in bed for securing your loads. The centerfold design allows for a shallower angle for picking up lowered cars. We have custom ramps fabricated and stored under bed that allow for picking up lowered vehicles.
• Suspension
o The front chassis is Silverado from the donor vehicle and rear is from original 1-ton truck. Rear section was adapted to fit front section at hinge point with steel plating. Rear axle is from a 3500 while front hubs are also from a 3500.
o Parking brake is operational using stock mechanisms and cables. Fuel lines, hydraulic lines and electrical are loomed thru hinge point and routed for movement.
o New Michelin Tires (6)
• Undercarriage
o Fabricated for function. Scrub lines have been maintained.
o Transmission coolers and hard lines routed in chassis. Upgraded Transmission cooler mounted at front grill area.
o Exhaust runs thru and under chassis and exits in front of hinge point.
• Engine Compartment
o 2003 Duramax 6.6 Diesel , 404 CI engine with Allison Transmission from donor vehicle.
o Dual batteries with custom battery trays fabricated into firewall.
o Stock radiator and intercooler. Core support was modified to fit body panel widths. Fuse panel was shifted to allow for Hydraulic pump mounted in pully system using flat belts.
o Fresh air intake relocated to bring in cool air for increased combustion efficiency.
o Brace struts added from firewall to core support to brace radiator section.
• Interior
o Factory dash retained and kept operational. Transition panel fabricated between windshield and dash to retain factor dashboard.
o Stock radio system retained with speakers.
o Air bags are operational and retained. Stock steering wheel, turn signals and controls.
o Factory seats front and rear seat retained. The floor section of Silverado was retained so mounting of seats was factory as well as pedal controls are all factory. Factory seat belts.
o Factory tilt column and associated controls.
o Factory AC system with factory controls.
o Front seat console is factory that lifts up and creates a third seat position in fron seat.
o Rear seats are factory that fold up and allow for more storage.
o Factory sun visors, factory overhead console mounted and related items retained.
o No headliner, roof insulated ready for upholsterer.
o Door panels are stock 48 Ford modified for power windows. Front window operational, rear door power window need adjustment, fitting and attention.
